This ambitious objective highlights the urgent need for developing indigenous technologies, particularly as tensions between China and the U.S. escalate over issues ranging from trade to technology. With President-elect Donald Trump signaling a more aggressive stance on China, the pressure on Huawei to strengthen its technological independence intensifies.
Harmony OS
Launched by Huawei five years ago in response to U.S. sanctions that severed its access to Google's Android system. The Shenzhen-based company, known for its diverse range of products from smartphones to laptops, later released an open-source version of the operating system.
Xu acknowledged that these sanctions pushed Huawei to accelerate the development of its own software. However, he emphasized that even the most advanced operating system is worthless if it does not gain widespread adoption.
He called on developers to play a key role in expanding the app ecosystem and urged government agencies, state-owned enterprises, and social organizations to integrate Harmony into their operations. Xu also appealed for consumer patience, asserting that increased use would be pivotal in speeding up the system's evolution.
Launched in August 2019, shortly after the U.S. placed Huawei on a trade blacklist due to security concerns (which Huawei has denied), Harmony OS has been central to the company’s strategy for technological self-reliance.
Concluding his remarks, Xu affirmed that "there is no turning back to victory," reiterating Huawei's steadfast commitment to advancing the Harmony ecosystem and turning the seemingly impossible into a reality.
