Italy is preparing to intensify its efforts against cybercrime, according to a draft decree reviewed by Reuters on Thursday. The move follows recent incidents of hacking into critical state and financial databases, prompting a swift governmental response. The proposed decree stipulates that individuals found "illegally accessing a computer or telematic system" that is deemed to be of military, public order, safety, health, or civil protection interest should face arrest.

Rome's cabinet is set to review the draft legislation on November 25, according to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office. The new law would also expand the authority of the chief anti-mafia prosecutor, who would oversee investigations into extortion cases linked to unauthorized system access or fraudulent telematics wiretaps.

Last month, Italian police placed four individuals under house arrest as part of an investigation into suspected illegal access to state databases. Dozens of others are under investigation, including Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio, the son of the late billionaire founder of Luxottica. Del Vecchio's lawyer denied any involvement in the events under investigation. Meanwhile, authorities in Bari are also probing a potential data breach at Italy's largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, where Prime Minister Meloni's personal account may have been compromised.
